My works examine human attempts at creating meaning or order in a painterly space that demands a meditative, contemplative state of the viewer.
Through an exploratory process of pushing the boundaries of the materials and techniques of oil painting, I aim for a language that is not verbal but pictorial. My works always convey a multitude of meanings rather than a single correct interpretation.
I draw upon religious practices, philosophy, anthropological literature, fiction and other sources that examine how we create, reshape and continuously negotiate our understanding of our experienced reality as humans.
In this context, I am interested in human constructs, both cognitive, scientific and societal, informed by thinkers such as Mary Douglas, Michel Foucault and Bruno Latour.
Alongside my work as an artist I also work as a translator and have a fundamental interest in languages, each with its own strengths and quirks, and for me the power of painting lies in communicating that which eludes other modes of language.
